Why Your Feet Swell During Pregnancy — And What You Can Do About It

If you are pregnant and wondering why your shoes suddenly feel two sizes too small, you are not alone. Foot swelling during pregnancy affects up to 80% of expectant mothers, and it is one of the most common discomforts of pregnancy.

What Causes Swollen Feet During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, your body produces approximately 50% more blood and body fluids to support your growing baby. This extra fluid tends to pool in your lower extremities due to gravity, especially during the second and third trimesters.

Increased blood volume: Your body needs more blood to nourish your baby, but the extra volume puts pressure on your blood vessels, causing fluid to leak into surrounding tissues.

Hormonal changes: Relaxin, the hormone that loosens your ligaments for delivery, also relaxes the ligaments in your feet. This can cause your foot bones to spread, literally increasing your shoe size.

Uterine pressure: As your baby grows, the uterus puts pressure on the veins that return blood from your legs, slowing circulation and causing fluid retention.

When Does Foot Swelling Start?

Most women notice swelling beginning around week 22 to 27 (late second trimester), with the most significant swelling in the third trimester.

5 Practical Tips to Manage Swollen Feet

1. Choose the right shoes. Look for wide fit, arch support, non-slip soles, and soft flexible materials. Avoid heels and narrow-toed shoes.

2. Elevate your feet. Prop your feet above heart level for 15-20 minutes when possible.

3. Stay hydrated. Drinking more water helps your body retain less fluid. Aim for 8-10 glasses daily.

4. Move regularly. Short walks, ankle circles, and foot flexes keep blood circulating.

5. Sleep on your left side. This reduces pressure on the vena cava, improving circulation.

When to Call Your Doctor

Sudden or severe swelling accompanied by headaches, vision changes, or upper abdominal pain can be a sign of preeclampsia and requires immediate medical attention.
